Many people want to know which is better, stepper motor or servo motor? First of all, we need to know the working principle of stepper motor and servo motor.

Stepper motor is an induction motor that uses electronic circuit to convert DC current into power supply. The polyphase timing controller supplies power to the stepper motor to achieve normal working state. The driver supplies power to the stepper motor in time. The servo motor is a variable speed device, which is the engine that controls the operation of mechanical components in the servo system.

The following is an analysis of the differences between stepper motor and servo motor:

1. Compared with stepper motor, the price of servo motor is much higher. With the same torque, the servo motor is much higher than the stepper motor, such as the 6NM motor, the stepper motor 86 can do it, while the servo motor is more than 110.

2. The setting of the stepper motor drive is simpler than that of the servo drive. It is only necessary to subdivide the current; The servo driver has hundreds of parameter settings, which is very cumbersome.

3.Since the output torque will decrease with the increase of speed, and will drop sharply at higher speed, the torque of stepper motor will be very small at high speed, generally below 20NM; The torque range of servo motor is relatively all-round, which is usually constant torque output. It can keep the torque constant within its rated speed, and can output the rated torque. Therefore, it is more suitable for high-speed and large-torque working conditions.

4. The shock resistance of the stepper motor is very high. If it is not properly controlled, it is easy to produce resonance; Generally, but the rotary transformer can also achieve good shock resistance.

5. In terms of conventional precision, the precision of stepper motor is relatively low, and the precision of each step is between 3% and 5%. However, the stepper motor will not accumulate the error of one step to the next step, so it has better position accuracy and motion repeatability; On the contrary, the precision of servo motor is generally high, and the voltage signal can be converted into torque and speed to drive the control object.

6. The stepper motor will have low frequency vibration when running at low speed, and its running stability is slightly inferior to that of the servo motor. The AC servo motor runs very smoothly, and it will not vibrate even at low speed.

7. If you have higher requirements for the speed range, I recommend using a stepper motor within 2000 RPM. If it exceeds this speed, I recommend selecting a servo motor.

Above are the advantages and disadvantages of some conventional stepper motors and servo motors. Is it clear at a glance? But which is better, there is no absolute statement. It’s the best if it’s more suitable for your requirements.
